    Research Profile

Project Status:

Dr. Murphy's Pilot Project ended in CADRE Phase I.  Dr. Murphy is currently a Research Project Lead in CADRE Phase II.

Description:

Dr. Murphy's pilot study employed a 2x2 factorial design to evaluate the effects of motivational incentives and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) on smoking behaviors in adults with overweight or obesity who smoke cigarettes (Target N=36). The study aimed to determine whether providing ENDS and/or financial incentives contingent on smoking abstinence can result in harm reduction (e.g., reduce cigarette consumption, decrease exhaled carbon monoxide [CO] levels, reduce cigarette dependence, improve self-efficacy for quitting, etc.) within this population. It also aimed to assess the impact on weight among those who switch to ENDS. Once enrolled, participants completed a baseline assessment and received brief information on the relative risks of ENDS compared to cigarettes. Eligible baselines were then randomly assigned to one of four groups: a 6-week provision of ENDS or no ENDS, and a 4-week provision of contingent incentives for smoking abstinence or noncontingent incentives for providing a sample regardless of CO level. All study procedures were conducted remotely.
