Description:
Dr. Sokolovsky’s project aimed to investigate the influence of complementary e-cigarette provision on cigarette use and lung function in adults with asthma who have been unable or unwilling to quit smoking using gold standard treatments. The aim of his study was to advance understanding of the relationship between smoking and respiratory functioning in adults with asthma and to inform the use of e-cigarettes in these populations. The study recruited non-treatment seeking adult smokers with asthma symptoms who did not regularly use e-cigarettes and randomized them to either receive complimentary e-cigarettes for 8 weeks or to an assessment-only control. Participants were then followed for 16 weeks. We hypothesized that participants who receive complimentary e-cigarettes would smoke fewer cigarettes per day, demonstrate reduced cigarette dependence, and exhibit better asthma control and lung functioning relative to the assessment-only group.
