CLC Laboratory
The CLC laboratory, led by CADRE Clinical Laboratory Core Director Dr. Jennifer Tidey, is located on the 3rd floor of Brown University’s School of Public Health building in downtown Providence, RI, which is easily reached by public transportation. The 4800 ft2 laboratory suite is secured with code-protected key-card access provided to researchers and staff conducting work in this space. The laboratory suite contains 18 participant observation rooms, a room equipped for conducting physical examinations, a workroom for preparing and storing biological samples, a waiting area, and a restroom for collecting urine samples.
Each investigator has access to their own observation room within the laboratory suite, which they can use for conducting in-person research or running remote sessions. The observation rooms range from 72-134 square feet in size and contain comfortable chairs and tables with desktop computers for completing questionnaires and other assessments. These rooms are equipped with large one-way mirrors and intercoms to allow visibility and communication from central control areas, where staff and investigators sit while monitoring study sessions. The observation rooms and control areas are ventilated with a state-of-the-art system for venting cigarette smoke and marijuana vapor.
The laboratory prep room/workroom contains centrifuges for sample preparation, an Ella immunoassay system, a biosafety cabinet, and refrigerators and freezers (-20 and -80) for storing biological samples. The -80 freezers are equipped with remote monitors that record temperature every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and notify Dr. Tidey and her staff when the temperature falls outside of a pre-set range. The workroom is ventilated with single-pass air so that blood samples can be processed within a biosafety cabinet in this room, per the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard (CFR 1910.1030).
Ella Immunoassay System
Ella is a benchtop automated ELISA platform designed to deliver accurate, reproducible data with no manual steps. Utilizing a unique microfluidic design, the Ella platform’s Simple Plex™ assays are fully validated, highly sensitive, and can assay up to 8 analytes simultaneously in less than 90 minutes. Running an assay requires adding diluted samples and wash buffer to the cartridge before placing the cartridge inside the Ella instrument. Explore the full menu of Simple Plex assays.
