Description:
Dr. Lopez’s research focuses on the link between social anxiety disorder and alcohol use among young adults, a group at high risk for developing alcohol use disorder. Social anxiety often emerges by age 23 and is a chronic condition, with most affected young adults experiencing persistent symptoms. Research shows that social anxiety frequently precedes alcohol problems, and individuals with social anxiety are at significantly higher risk for developing alcohol dependence.
This pilot study recruits up to 18 young adults who experience moderate to severe social anxiety and engage in regular heavy drinking. Participants complete baseline assessments, a 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol, and an exit interview. The study aims to establish feasibility of recruitment, test and refine EMA methods, and gather preliminary data to inform future interventions and a subsequent R01 study. Ultimately, this work will guide the development of targeted strategies to prevent alcohol use disorder among young adults with social anxiety.
